How Climate Stress Could Impact Natural Essential Oil Supply

The global natural essential oil industry is entering a period of increasing climate-related uncertainty.

The developing El Niño conditions are bringing irregular rainfall, prolonged dry periods and water stress across several important aromatic-crop producing regions, particularly in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia, a major source of natural aromatic materials such as Patchouli Oil, is already facing challenging growing conditions in some producing areas. Delayed planting and concerns over soil moisture could influence future crop availability.

As the world faces the growing impact of El Niño and changing climatic conditions, the global supply of several essential oils is experiencing increasing challenges. Crops grown predominantly in specific geographical regions are particularly vulnerable—for example, Patchouli from Indonesia, along with several other aromatic crops traditionally associated with limited regions of the world. Climate disruptions, changing rainfall patterns and extreme weather conditions can directly affect crop yields, availability and ultimately global prices.

At Aromatic & Allied, we have been preparing for these challenges for decades. Since 1977, we have been working hand-in-hand with thousands of farmers across India, developing aromatic crops across India's incredibly diverse soil, climatic and geographical conditions. Our objective is not simply to source raw materials—we are building a complete, sustainable and diversified supply chain for aromatic crops, helping the global industry secure reliable supplies of natural and organic ingredients.

Over the years, we have successfully introduced and developed several crops in India that were traditionally associated with other parts of the world. Patchouli, traditionally associated with Indonesia; Lavender, historically associated with Bulgaria and other traditional growing regions; Geranium, traditionally cultivated in regions such as Egypt and China; and Chamomile, traditionally associated with countries including Nepal—these are just some examples of crops that we have worked to develop with Indian farmers.

And our work continues.

More recently, we have also been developing Tea Tree Oil in India, a crop traditionally identified with Australia. By combining agricultural knowledge, farmer partnerships, scientific research, sustainable cultivation practices and our experience in natural and organic ingredients, we continue to explore how India can become an important and dependable source for the world's aromatic industry.
