Eucalyptus Oil - A Medicine for Mankind

There are over 400 different species of eucalyptus. Eucalyptus globulus, also known as Blue Gum, is the main source of eucalyptus oil used globally. Chinese, Indian Ayurvedic, Greek, and other European styles of medicine have incorporated it into the treatment of a range of conditions for thousands of years. Leaves are steam distilled to extract the oil, which is a colorless liquid with a strong, sweet, aromatic and woody scent. Its main constituent is 1,8-cineole, also known as eucalyptol.

 

Benefits and uses of eucalyptus

 

The numerous health benefits of eucalyptus oil have attracted the attention of the entire world, and it has stimulated a great deal of exploration into its usage in aromatherapy as well as in conventional medicine.



Relief from Cold & Flu

Eucalyptus essential oil is effective for fighting against a number of respiratory tract infections including cold, cough, running nose, sore throat, nasal congestion, bronchitis, and sinusitis. To get relief from colds, you can add a few drops of the oil to hot water and inhale the steam, or add it to your diffuser. Alternatively, rub a little oil on the pillow to ensure a good nights sleep if you are troubled with congestion and wet cough.

 

Keep the bugs away

Mosquitoes and other biting insects carry diseases that can be dangerous to our health. Avoiding their bites is our best defense. Eucalyptus is an effective insect repellent and insecticide. Using Eucalyptus oil in the formulation helps in keeping these bugs away. Researchers have found that essential oil of Eucalyptus is active against the larvae and pupae of the housefly.


 

Pain relief

Eucalyptus oil act as a pain reliever, and research indicates that the oil may have analgesic properties. The essential oil does so by influencing both the central and peripheral nervous system response to noxious stimuli.

 

Antibacterial Properties

Eucalyptus essential oil has antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. When massaged onto the chest and used as a vapor rub or inhalant, it can relieve the signs and symptoms of harmful conditions by clearing the lungs and reducing inflammation. It is best if applied to both, the chest and the back with carrier oil.
